How the crown chakra is connected to emotional wellbeing

Untitled design-105

Today we’re finishing up my series on the chakra system and its links to emotional health and wellbeing with the crown chakra – the final chakra in the traditional 7-chakra series.

As the name suggests, the crown chakra sits right at the top of the skull (the ‘crown’ of the head) and is our connection with the divine or our ‘higher power’, closely linked with enlightenment and spirituality.

What is the crown chakra?

Symbolised by the colour violet or pure white, the crown chakra (Sahasrara in Sanskrit) is associated with our sense of Self and our connection with our true being on a deeper level which transcends the ego. This is about looking beyond our habits and histories and considering who we truly are when we are stripped of material assets and identification with the ego.

In deeper yoga philosophy a balanced crown chakra (and balance within the entire chakra system) is associated with samadhi or total enlightenment – union with our soul and with all life.

How does the crown chakra affect emotional health?

When the crown chakra is activated, it brings us a feeling of being in flow with universal energy – along with understanding, peace, compassion and gratitude. We are more able to see things with clarity and true perspective, shifting from unhappiness and stress to a state of stable bliss and acceptance. We are also more open to transformation and letting go, shedding old thought processes and habits so that we can express who we really are.

Signs the crown chakra is imbalanced

There are some clear signs to be aware of which suggest your crown chakra may be blocked or imbalanced. These include:

  • Impaired intelligence, brain health or focus
  • Restlessness
  • Melancholy, sadness, depression
  • Disillusionment, comparing and complaining
  • Boredom
  • Closed off to new ideas, thoughts or knowledge
  • Cynicism
  • Apathy
  • Self-destructive tendencies

An underactive crown chakra can manifest as lack of inspiration, oversleeping and confusion or indecisiveness over what you want to do and how you want to show up in the world. Physical symptoms of imbalance include poor coordination, headaches and exhaustion.

How can you balance the crown chakra?

There are lots of wonderful things you can do to support the crown chakra – but as is the case with the entire chakra system, you’ll want to work your way up the chakras in order from root to crown.

Crystal therapy: Certain crystals can be used to support the crown chakra – including clear quartz, amethyst, lapis lazuli and white agate. Arrange around the home or wear on your person for best results.

Meditation: You can find plenty of guided meditations specifically designed to balance and support the crown chakra on various streaming services and social media platforms – from YouTube and Spotify to Apple Music. Find one that resonates with you and mediate regularly until you feel a shift occur.

Reiki or energy healing: Reiki and other types of energy healing work directly or indirectly with the chakra system to support better balance. Your practitioner will be able to identify blockages and imbalances and work in the areas needed the most.

Aromatherapy: Essential oils have so many versatile benefits – and many are also linked with certain chakras. Jasmine, lavender, cedarwood and frankincense are wonderful for balancing the crown chakra. Add to a diffuser, bath or roll-on for gentle relief and emotional healing. Remember to always mix with a quality carrier oil where essential oil is coming into contact with the skin.

Mantra chanting: The mantra associated with the crown chakra is AUM – the most sacred sound in the universe symbolic of creation and union or oneness with all things – including the divine and our soul within. This is the mantra you’ll most often find being chanted before or after a yoga class. To activate and balance the crown chakra, try including a chant of AUM before or after a meditation or breathing exercises.
