What is the Solar Plexus Chakra, and how can healing it support Emotional Wellbeing?

Today we’re continuing my special chakra series (if this is your first time here, take a look at the previous chakra blogs here) – and in this blog we’re focusing on and exploring the Solar Plexus Chakra.

This wonderful chakra governs our ego, power and sense of self-confidence – areas which in most of us require a little extra attention and deeper healing.

What is the Solar Plexus Chakra?

The third energy centre in the seven-chakra system, the Solar Plexus Chakra is symbolised by a blissful, beautiful yellow colour. Known as ‘Manipura’ in Sanskrit (meaning ‘lustrous gem’), it is situated just above the navel. Some people believe that the Solar Plexus is connected to our ‘gut feeling’, the innate sense of knowing which guides our thoughts and actions.

How is the Solar Plexus Chakra linked to mental and physical wellbeing?

Our Solar Plexus is associated with the fire element and on a physical level our digestive system, diaphragm, energy balance and body temperature. On an emotional and psychological level it deals with our sense of self, joy, energy and personal empowerment.

When in balance, the Solar Plexus supports:

  • Confidence
  • Self-motivation
  • Personal power
  • Sureness in your decisions and direction in life
  • A sense of purpose
  • Healthy digestion and appetite
  • Balanced weight

However an imbalanced Solar Plexus can manifest in the following ways:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Lack of confidence
  • Trouble making decisions and trusting yourself
  • Control issues
  • Digestive disorders such as IBS
  • Weight gain
  • Overeating
  • Fatigue

Supporting and balancing the Solar Plexus Chakra

As is the case with every single chakra in the body, there are many ways we can support Solar Plexus healing. These include:

Connecting with the sun’s energy: This one may feel challenging during winter months – but even 10 minutes of sun exposure each day can help to support Solar Plexus healing. Take a walk on your lunch break or sit with the sun on your face – if the sun is hidden by the clouds, get outside for some fresh air anyway and connect with nature.

Yoga: Specific yoga poses can support with rebalancing the Solar Plexus – including bow pose, camel pose, warriors 1, 2 and 3, and plank pose.

Crystal healing: If you’ve worked with me or followed my blog for some time, you’ll know I’m a huge believer in the power of healing crystal energy. I use them every single day to bring balance, calm and support wherever I need it the most. For the Solar Plexus chakra yellow and amber-toned crystals are recommended such as citrine, topaz, tiger’s eye and yellow calcite.

Aromatherapy: Another of my personal favourites, aromatherapy can be used to support chakra healing in a very enjoyable and accessible way.  You can add essential oils to a diffuser, lava bead bracelet or pendant or blend with a carrier oil for a soothing aromatherapy bath. You can even add this to a rollerball vessel to take with you wherever you go and apply to your pulse points whenever you need a pick-me-up. Essential oils which support the Solar Plexus chakra include cinnamon, clove, cypress and sandalwood.

Affirmations: Saying affirmations on a regular basis to support with feelings insecurity and low self-esteem can help heal and re-balance the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Food: Eating a healthy, balanced diet will support the entire chakra system as well as your overall physical and mental wellbeing. But focusing on certain foods can help specifically with the Solar Plexus – such as turmeric, bananas, pineapple, corn, yellow peppers and lemon.
