Understanding the Sacral Chakra and its link to Emotional Wellbeing

Untitled design-93

If you read my latest blog on the Root Chakra (you can take a look here if you haven’t already), you’ll know that the chakra system has a significant influence on our health in many ways. These influences are buried deep within and are often inaccessible to us unless we take the time to look and know how to recognise the signs. Many people I meet are unaware of the effect these underlying issues and blockages can have until they learn about the chakras and understand where imbalances and misalignment may be affecting our lives.

Today I’m going to talk about the Sacral Chakra – our centre for pleasure, creativity, harmony and enjoyment of life. These elements are so often dismissed or deprioritised by our modern society – and in fact they are essential to our overall sense of self, vitality, fulfilment and wellness.

What is the Sacral Chakra?

Situated below the navel just above the Root Chakra, the Sacral Chakra is referred to as the second chakra. It is symbolised by the colour yellow or orange, and is known in Sanskrit as Svadhisthana.

How is the Sacral Chakra connected to our mental and physical wellbeing?

The Sacral Chakra is highly emotional and governs not just our relationship with ourselves, but our relationship with others. It’s about flow, flexibility and fun! Our chakras begin to develop during our formative years, so many of us carry emotional baggage from previous experiences as well as the influence of our day-to-day lives now.

Signs of a blocked Sacral Chakra include:

  • Back pain
  • Low libido
  • Difficulty expressing emotion
  • Lack of creativity
  • Neglecting our own needs and desires
  • Reproductive issues
  • Bladder or kidney problems
  • Lower abdominal/pelvic pain

In contrast, healthy Sacral Chakra alignment looks like:

  • Being able to express yourself and your needs freely
  • Tapped into your creativity and creative self
  • Healthy sexual desire and sensuality
  • Nourishing relationships with others

Supporting and balancing your Sacral Chakra

If when reading the lists above you sense that there is an imbalance within your Sacral Chakra, there are lots of things you can do to help restore, realign and revitalise not just this chakra, but the whole chakra system for better mental, emotional and physical health.

These tips and habits are inexpensive and accessible – anyone can do them, and you don’t need special skills or resources, just a little time and know-how.

Yoga: Whilst yoga helps to rebalance the entire chakra system, certain poses (asana) in particular are linked to the Sacral Chakra. These include Happy Baby, Goddess Pose and Malasana (yogi squat).

Crystal healing: I am a huge lover of crystal healing and I carry crystals with me everywhere I go. Certain stones and crystals have energetic properties which align with different chakras. Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Moonstone and Carnelian are great crystals for Sacral Chakra balancing.

Essential oils: Another of my passions – essential oils! Incredibly easy to use and non-invasive, essential oils are also pleasurable for the senses – a huge tick in the Sacral Chakra box! I love Ylang Ylang, Rose, Patchouli and Sweet Orange for this chakra – all uplifting and sensual oils which can brighten mood and help you tap into your passion and inner fire.

Guided meditation: There are lots of wonderful guided meditations out there which focus specifically on strengthening and supporting the Sacral Chakra. During the meditation you might be asked to visualise the chakra or yellow light and move through different emotions and elements connected with it. Guided meditations can be found on music streaming apps like Spotify and on YouTube.

Reiki: Reiki is a type of healing which works on an energetic level in the body – therefore it’s particularly useful for rebalancing and aligning chakras. During a session your reiki practitioner will be able to sense and feel where the healing is required – you will have an opportunity to discuss your concerns before treatment and can mention any specific areas or chakras you feel you need to work on.

Reflexology: Reflexology isn’t officially linked with the chakras, but in my experience (and that of many others) it is an incredibly powerful way to help rebalance and heal any blockages or issues within the chakra system. Prior to treatment your therapist will ask about your concerns and reasons for reflexology – the treatment will then be tailored to you and any symptoms or chakras you’d like to work on.

Creative activities: Last (and certainly not least), you might like to indulge in some fun creative activities you may have neglected for a while. I must stress that the focus should not be to be good at something, or with a view to setting it up as a side hustle. Just create – purely for fun! This could be singing, dancing, painting or drawing – or writing that novel you always wanted to write. Tapping into our creative power is a great way to nurture and nourish the Sacral Chakra and helps with visualisation and mindset work, too.
