How healing the third eye chakra can support emotional health

If you’ve been following my chakra series up until now, you’ll now know that each chakra can have a significant influence on our emotional wellbeing as well as our physical health*. The third eye chakra is no different – affecting not just our mood and connection with others but also our sense of self.

What is the third eye chakra?

Known as ajna in Sanskrit, the third eye chakra is located between the eyebrows and relates to our self-awareness, intuition, emotional balance and sense of clarity. It is the 6th chakra in the traditional 7 chakra system and represented by the colour indigo, focused on inner knowledge, wisdom and being truly open to opportunities and what is happening around us.

How does the third eye chakra affect emotional health?

When the third eye is balanced and in proper alignment, you will feel self-aware, imaginative and able to trust your intuition. You also feel aligned with the knowledge available to you at any time, which enables you to make confident and balanced decisions. Overall this can help us to feel more supported and aware as we navigate the stresses and struggles of everyday life, guided by a deeper understanding that we are following the right path and have access to all the information we need.

Signs the third eye is imbalanced

Feeling ‘stuck’ in life, mentally clouded or unclear and unable to obtain perspective on situations are all signs of third eye imbalances. If the third eye chakra is under-active, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • ’Brain fog’
  • Lack of focus
  • Poor memory
  • Confusion
  • Insomnia
  • Nightmares

If it is overactive, you may feel spaced out, overloaded or unsure of which direction to take in your life or who you are.

How can you balance the third eye chakra?

As is the case with all our chakras, there are many wonderful ways we can bring the third eye back into balance. These include:

Meditation: Meditation is one of the main ways we can connect more fully with the third eye and bring more awareness to how we are feeling and what we may need to pay attention to. Focus on the space between the eyebrows, breathing in and out deeply. You can also find dedicated third eye guided meditations on YouTube and streaming channels such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Yoga: Yoga asanas or postures can help to relieve many different chakra blockages and imbalanced. Child’s Pose, Dolphin and Eagle Pose are all great postures for strengthening and balancing the third eye.

Crystal therapy: I’m a huge fan of crystals for healing as they are so accessible and easy to use. Azurite, Labradorite, Citrine and Clear Quartz are all effective for balancing and realigning the third eye.

Aromatherapy: Certain essential oils can be highly beneficial for regulating mood and supporting our emotional health, especially in times of stress. Different oils correspond to different chakras – try lavender, tea-tree and grapefruit to awaken and support the third eye.

Reiki: Reiki is a form of ancient energy healing therapy which also works to realign the chakras. Your reiki therapist can intuitively work with whichever chakras need attention, but you can also share with them if you feel your third eye needs specific focus.
